Figure Drawing with Titans

Long time no post!! Wow--it's been quite a while!!!

Summer has definitely been an adventurous roller coaster ride since I've been interning here at the Walt Disney Animation studios. It's been exciting to meet the giants of animation here at the Studio of not only Disney, but Pixar as well. I'm making plenty of new friends and acquaintances that I hope will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, I can not speak of my goings-ons here at the studio---yes, yes....grumble grumble!! Although, I will share with you all my drawings that I've done in Karl Gnass' anatomy classes. These vary from 1- 5 min. poses and were completed with compressed charcoal. The very first drawing was done in a private figure session with James Finch and Bill Perkins.

I feel very small among these animation masters.

Tata Gala, Ills, and More

I haven't disappeared my friends! I promise that I've been making all sorts of things for your eyes to see. To go from bottom to top: the robot piece was inspired by Jon Foster and Phil Hale for a billboard assignment, the girl piece was done for the annual Tata Gala show in Sarasota at the D3 studio gallery (which had an awesome turnout this year!), the third is a head study of a model that I felt came out decently, a shot of my current studio space with a comp. ill assignment on the easel and storyboarding work in the moleskine, lastly is a rough sketch of our current open assignment. I really do hope to make the top sketch a real home runner for the final, the story behind it is very close to my heart.

So Much Work--So Little Time!

I thought that I accumulated enough to keep you all busy for a while. My apologies for not keeping on my weekly schedule, I've been a bit behind and am trying to catch up. Time management is a key issue as of late, but whew!--tons of fun dudes and dudettes! To go from top to bottom with work, I have some recent process on a current assignment, process work and reference pictures of myself for "The Who" portrait which I intend on painting in gouache, but will remain a digital painting for now; and lastly I have recent molskine action from George Pratt's drawing class among numerous drawings from my own figure class.

Academy Update

Hey just wanted to give a quick update of some work done here at the Academy. Been really lovin' figure drawing as of late, it's a great technique that I need to explore a little more. Also, I've got a tight sketch from the second assignment that I'm currently messing around with in PS and Corel. So sit tight, I promise to show the final. I've also some studies done for a current assignment, along with a sketch. There's two assignments this week to do a Rolling Stones cover, along with a narrative scene for a children's book. Irving Berlin, a famous broadway composer known for a "White Christmas" is my Rolling Stones musician, and The Gift of the Magi is the story I chose of three. Still have to get moving on the tight sketch for that one--it's a bugger!

I have plans of renovating my portfolio on a very serious level after the Academy, it's about time I get myself out there. So I plan on entering as many competitions as I can, and politely pester all the major places that I'd like to see my work put up on its pages. Although, Pixar and Blue Sky are major goals of mine.

Best of Ringling + Progress!

Hey everyone!-- Hope everything is going well for you. Just got back from the Best of Ringling show and took a couple shots while I was there. Also, have some goodies for you all to feast upon ranging from some pencil renderings, figure painting and a recent illustration done for a play called "The Giver" that's being shown here in Sarasota. It may possibly make the poster for advertisement, although there's not any dosh involved at least my stuff will be seen.

Anyway, thought I'd give a quick update--back to work!

Update

Been quite busy as of late. Been feeling the fire underneath from all the deadlines that have been pelted at me the past few weeks. But hey, this is the most fun I've had yet! Been learning and connecting more with all you good people, it really is great to hang out and just learn from one another. Well, I've been motivated to practice more with graphite as of late and it's been quite rewarding (not to mention really relaxing). It's making me return back to my sense of values and shifts in planes, which is something I need to practice at daily.

I've really been trying to push my vision as to seeing in three values and dividing values into simple shapes. Also I have some head studies of a friend for a new painting I'm conceptualizing, pics from the past Avant Garde event (sold two pieces!) and a finished illo based off of the fable "Androcles". Androcles is the story about the man who removes a thorn from the paw of a lion, and is later captured; the lion sparing his life once they are placed in an arena together. It was fun to illustrate, quite helpful with using the James Jean technique by dividing shapes with color over your line work. I realized that I have too much going on in my compositions and need to really simplify my focus.
